Sofia Coppola
Hi! Today in my blog post I am going to be writing about Sofia Coppola and her film Maria Antoinette. Sofia Coppola has a different take than many other directors when writing a film. Sofia wants to be able to write and film about what she wants to create, not always what the audience wants to see. When watching the film Maria Antoinette you could see how Coppola used her cinematography to demonstrate a coherent and intentional vision. In the movie Coppola created scenes with lavish desserts and drinks of all different colors. These scenes from the movie stood out to me being that in most films the audience would not pay much attention to these items, but in her films she made it almost the center of attention when Maria and her friends would be getting ready to go party.
The film Maria Antionette also demonstrated cultural awareness. In the beginning of the film Maria was careless with her and her husband's fortune by spending it on parties, gambling, clothing items, plants, and many other things. While Maria was making careless decisions it was affecting the people of her country France. There was a scene in the movie where the citizens of France were gathered outside their home trying to kill Maria because she was spending money foolishly and it was affecting their country. Maria was able to see what others thought of her during that moment, which sparked change in her. Maria felt sorry for what had done, in which she bowed down to the citizens of France as a sign of forgiveness and showed them that she is sorry for what she has done.
These sources helped me find more information about Sofia Coppola and her writing styles. I very much enjoyed watching Maria Antionette and look forward to watching other films of hers.
