The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Hi! Our first film we watched in class this semester was The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari . This film was definitely different and not like anything I have watched before. While watching  this film I could see the limitations of technology that filmmakers had during this time. In this film there was no talking, there were only words on a screen that you would have to read. It was a challenge for myself to keep engaged in the film because even though there were words on the screen, they would first show the scene and the characters mouthing words to each other and then it would take several seconds for the words to pop up on the screen to see what they were saying to each other. Even though there was no talking in the film, the filmmakers did include music which at times helped keep me engaged because the music was well synced up to what was going on in the film. I thought the filmmakers did a good job on using what they had to c...

Battleship Potemkin

In the film Battleship Potemkin by Sergei Eisenstein, demonstrated how a collage moving images known as a montage can create an emotional effect rather than a logical narrative sequence. After watching the film I was taken back by the shock and sadness I was feeling. The filmmakers did a good job of creating a story that showed the emotions of the people who were in the film, even though there were only a few words spoken throughout. While the mother had an opportunity to keep running, she instead turned around, picked up her son and carried him to the soldiers for help. Instead of the soldiers helping her they shot and killed her. This film brought out many emotions and also the realization of what many had to go through during their ...

Introduction

Hi! My name is Ellenie Dyrby and this is my first official blog post. I am a sophomore at North Central College and my major is health science. I am planning on becoming a Speech and Language Pathologist that works in schools. Outside of school I enjoy boating, swimming, running, hiking, reading, traveling,  and hanging out with my friends. I am from a small town of around 200 people called Cabery, IL. Living in a small town with not much to do I often found myself turning on movies when I couldn't be outside. When I was younger I always tended to watch the same two movies which were Bridge to Terabithia and Iron Man. I have a difficult time picking out new movies because when I find a movie I love, I just want to keep rewatching it. That is a major reason I am excited to take this class because I hope to watch new movies and also learn more about the history of filmmaking.  A movie I recently watched was "Smile". I thought I was not a fan of horror movies, until I went ...
